Fall 2013
The following is the fourth and final part of the RAPS assignments (Reflective Activities and Your Portfolio). The assignment was to create a pro's and con's list about using technology in your classroom through a powerpoint presentation. I chose to base the debate over technology in a kindergarten classroom, is there already too much, or not enough of it.

Reflection:
Did your views on technology change as you developed positions on each side of the debate?
My views absolutely changed, not 100%, but I now understand why technology is important in the classroom. My kindergarten classroom will be student centered, so it is really important to me that every student has the opportunity to teach another student. I want them to decide how they learn and adapt my curriculum around their learning styles. If they want to be extremely hands on with their projects, using technology or not, that is up to them. At first I was honestly fully against having even one computer for them to use. My biggest concern is that my students might not learn the best way for their intelligence. My main goal is to overcome that fear and learn what works best for each student, whether that involves technology or not.
What did you learn about how you will plan for technology in your teaching?
I want to utilize technology in two specific areas of the curriculum. Firstly, showing examples for the visual learners, such as movies or short clips, especially when teaching new languages. Secondly, students can use Word and PowerPoint for presentations in class. Kindergarten may seem young for putting together presentations, but that’s not what I expect from them. They can use the slides to guide them along when talking about a subject or story. I can use PowerPoint to its fullest extent when I need a bigger visual on how more detailed ideas work.
What types of technology are you likely to use in your teaching, and which ones will you avoid? Why?
I will utilize Powerpoint, Word, and any other program that I feel will only help my teaching. I really do hope for only a few computers in my classroom, I really want my students to learn the important basic skills first, then, use those skills through technology. I want to use technology when I’m teaching something other than the basic reading, writing and arithmetic. When teaching a new language, science topic or a history lesson, it will be essential to engage the students visually, in hope to avoid losing interest and keep them excited about learning.
