My lesson plan for integrating math and literature together for EDU 327 Math for Young Children at University of Maine at Augusta, involved combining the children's classic picture book Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and a few different Common Core Math Standards. My lesson plan fits under Teaching Standard #8: Instructional Strategies because of how I used different aspects of a familiar book, and incorporated developmentally appropriate math content into the reading and discussion of the book. As explained in the lesson plan and reflection posted below, students will use math skills that they have learned, and learn how to apply it in a unique situation. Thinking about time, length, duration, counting, one-to-one correspondence, students will explore the journey Max takes in Where The Wild Things Are. Students will also explore geometry, shapes, sizes, comparisons, and more one-to-one correspondence with addition and subtraction in a fun, creative arts activity.
